America’s children are overweight. Why? Because WE are! Two-thirds



 

(66%) of Americans are overweight according to the Centers for Disease Control/Prevention, with 15-30% of the children either overweight or dangerously close to being overweight.

That means that nearly 200 million Americans fall into the overweight category. We are setting a horrible example for our children.

According to a study conducted by Weight Watchers International Inc. and the American Health Foundation, 25% of American children are now officially overweight, and the youngest are especially at risk.

These extra pounds are more than just a passing phase; another ADA study suggests that half of obese children will become fat adults.

“Obesity among children is increasing at an alarming rate, and the health consequences are very severe,” confirms Karen Miller-Kovach, RD, chief scientist for Weight Watchers.

Billions of dollars every year are spent on medical bills by overweight/obese patients due to (preventable) obesity related illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

What’s behind the growing number of children who are now overweight? “Lack of exercise accounts for more than 50 percent of the problem,”

says Miller-Kovach. She also adds, only 30 percent of the problem is due to overeating or choosing the wrong types of foods. So, let’s resolve to better ourselves, set the example, and get our children moving again.

Chances are, you did this as a kid, too. Maybe a couple of days a week could be “pool days.” Meet friends at the pool and spend the day being active in the water.

Make sure your kids wear sunscreen, and that there is adult supervision. In fact, an adult can get in the pool, too, and teach the kids fun games like water polo.

Jumping Rope

Many kids used to spend a long time on the playground jumping rope.

It can be done when school’s out, too! Why not have a friendly neighborhood competition with other kids to see who can jump the longest, or the most jumps? Kids can learn fun jump rope games like Double Dutch, and all those great jumping rhymes and songs.

Martial Arts

Consider enrolling your kids in a martial arts class. Not only will they get the physical activity during class, but they will get exercise at home practicing their forms.

One thing I can never come to terms with is weight

Nothing is worse than seeing a small child who is obese. This is terrible! I often wonder what other cultures think when they visit the United States.

We have to teach our kids proper physical fitness and be certain their health is not in danger. Are you with me, folks? Okay, so we already know they learn physical fitness in school. This starts in first grade.

In addition to this, we, the parents, need to help them with proper diet and exercise at home. Always encourage your kids to run and play outside. I do this with my seven year old daughter and she prefers the outdoors.

The last thing she wants is to be stuck inside. She gets tons of exercise this way. I know for a fact that this benefits her health. Furthermore, be sure that you’re providing your children with the right diet.

This means very little sugar, salts and saturated fats. Do away with fast food completely if you can. We did, and it’s so much better for their bodies.
